Introduction to Motherboard
Motherboard is basically one of the most important part of the computer located at the bottom of the computer chassis, it is also known as Printed Circuit Board & generally it is of 4 or 6 layer of PCB. Motherboard allocates power to all the hardware component connected with board. It is the main circuit board and it interconnects the remaining part of computer.
Apple will say it as a Logic Board or System Board and in terms of many people we are also referred as a Mainboard, Baseboard.
Motherboard is the kind of circuit board that supports all the plug in one larger central circuit board.

AT stands for Advanced technology Motherboard, this was produced in mid of 80’s, It was used in processors like P2 to P5 generation. It works on the six pin plugs and sockets which is used to work as power connector.
ATX stands for Advanced Technology Extended Motherboard.This was produced by intel as an advancement of AT motherboard it was convenient in dimension and allow’s interchangeability of connected parts and various add-ons like keyboard connector and extra slots on back plates which was introduced in mid of 90’s.
LPX stands for Low Profile Extension Motherboard, This was created in 90’s and has input and output port in this boards at the backside of system and this experiment became beneficial and adopted in future models.
BTX stands for Balanced Technology Extended Motherboard, It was develop to avoid some issues while using latest technologies, The BTX was also proposed by intel after ATX , For solving some issues created when using high power.
Pico BTX Motherboard
Pico BTX Motherboard are much similar to the BTX motherboard but its form factor is smaller in size, and it supports only one or two expansion slots.
Mini ITX Motherboard
Mini ITX Motherboard is low power motherboard, it was created in 2001 by VIA Technologies. It was mainly used in small form factor computer systems that are cooled easily and has low power consumption architecture. It was mainly used for Home theater PC systems or in some systems where customer wants less noise of fan.
Motherboard Schematic Overview
NorthBridge is the core logic chipset architecture on motherboard, Northbridge is directly connected to the processor through Front Side Bus (FSB) and also controls tasks responsible for the high performance.
In the older models it was also known as Memory Controller Hub or Graphic & Memory Controller Hub. In recent models graphics are integrated with processors.
The Northbridge basically control the Processor, Ram slots & PCI Express and Southbridge.
Southbridge is the core logic chipset architecture on motherboard, Southbridge controls the Hard Disk Drive (HDD) controller, I/O controller & Integrated Device Hardware. Integrated Device hardware includes sound card, video card, USB, PCI, Ethernet, IDE, ISA, Bios.
